JEA Awarded Two Top Honors in Safety and Operational Excellence
Jacksonville, FL (May 13, 2009) – JEA has earned the American Public Power Association’s electric utility safety award for safe operating practices in 2008. JEA won the first place award for utilities with more than four million worker-hours and with a 1.02 RIR for the calendar year of 2008. The recordable incident rate, or RIR, is calculated based upon an organization’s number of work-related incidents and hours that are worked, as defined by the Bureau of Labor and Statistics.
“We are very proud of our safety record. It’s a reflection of trained and skilled employees who are committed to the highest standards of public service,” said Jim Dickenson, JEA Managing Director and CEO. “JEA’s highest priority is keeping our employees safe while delivering reliable electric, water and sewer services to our community.”
For the past 48 years, the APPA has conducted an annual safety contest to emphasize the importance of safe working habits, to recognize those utilities whose employees achieve particularly safe operations, and to collect statistical information about safety issues. Utilities compete in categories according to their size (number of hours worked) and are evaluated by their recordable incident rate. Last year, more than 200 public utilities entered APPA’s annual contest.
The American Public Power Association is a non-profit, non-partisan service organization for the nation's more than 2,000 community-owned electric utilities that serve more than 43 million Americans.
JEA has also been recognized by the Florida Water Environment Association as the top municipal water and wastewater utility in the state for operational excellence.
The award is presented to the utility demonstrating performance excellence in strategic planning, employee relationships, organizational improvements, communications and competiveness, and a basic set of values, requirements, and processes aimed at increasing customer value and driving organizational effectiveness.
JEA is the eighth largest community owned electric utility in the United States, providing electric, water and sewer service to more than 875,000 accounts in northeast Florida.
