JEA's Electric Safety and Conservation Workshops

JEA offers the following workshops, taught upon request, on various topics related to safety or conservation which are open to the public. In addition, if JEA will be participating in an upcoming community event, we will list it here, as well.

If you’re interested in a JEA workshop presentation, or have any questions, email or call Brian Pippin at conservation@jea.com or 904-665-7051.

Savings without Sacrifice (1 Hour)
Our most popular program! A comprehensive review of how any homeowner can save energy and water at home with low-cost and no-cost changes. Learn how energy and water is used in your home and how much each area contributes to your overall JEA utility bill. See how simple changes and preventative maintenance measures can substantially reduce your utility bill by up to 50 percent!

JEA Theater Program: "The Search for a Better Light" (45 minutes)
JEA has developed and produced an energy and water conservation program designed for elementary students. The production targets third to fifth graders and is presented by local professional speaker and entertainer, Patrick Robinson, whose high-energy, unique style captures and holds students’ attention. The interactive program conveys simple, low-cost ways students and their families can save energy and water in the home. The content of the presentation coincides with the Science Curriculum covered in the Sunshine State Standard. This fun and highly entertaining program lasts between 30 and 45 minutes, depending on the level of participation and your specific needs. Please give call to discuss bringing the program to your class or school to give the kids a lesson in conservation they will certainly enjoy and hopefully share with their families.

Introduction to Compact Fluorescent Lights (CFLs) (30 minutes)
Everything you wanted to know about CFLs but didn’t know to ask! CFLs use 75 percent less electricity, put out 70 percent less heat and last up to 12 times longer than standard incandescent bulbs. However, if you don’t select the right one you won’t be happy with the light it puts out or how long it lasts, and these bulbs require proper disposal. We’ll answer all these questions and more so you can take this great first step to becoming green.

Irrigation Basics (1 Hour)
This is an introductory presentation for anyone that has never owned an irrigation system or is not familiar with the turf landscape varieties in Northeast Florida. We cover the major components associated with your irrigation system (controller, sprayers, rotors, etc.) as well as the most efficient way to operate your system within the watering recommendations set forth by the St. John’s River Water Management District.

Plan Your Planting (1 Hour)
This presentation is an overview of waterwise principles, which can help you establish and maintain a healthy landscape by matching the right plants with existing site conditions so that the use of additional resources, such as water, fertilizer, pesticides and labor, is minimized. In addition, waterwise principles reduce the amount of pollutants reaching water bodies because fewer yard chemicals are used. The principles discussed in detail are:

  • Planning and Designing
  • Obtaining a Soil Analysis
  • Choosing Proper Plants
  • Using Turf Wisely
  • Irrigating Efficiently
  • Using Mulches
  • Performing Proper Maintenance
This is an excellent presentation for those new to Northeast Florida and anyone who needs a refresher on Florida-friendly planting practices and turf choices.

This Green Old House (1 Hour)
This presentation is for owners of historic properties who want to maintain the unique architectural features of their homes while making them more energy and water efficient. We will review the challenges and opportunities associated with remodeling green. In addition, we will discuss window replacement, HVAC and lighting. Because the concept of sustainability is mutually supported by historical preservationists and the green movement, anyone owning or restoring a historical home will benefit from this discussion.

Energy and Water Conservation for Housing Managers (1 Hour)
Owners, housing managers, maintenance employees and client/occupants play key roles in having an energy and water efficient building. This presentation offers energy and water efficiency ideas in lighting, preventative maintenance and irrigation. In addition, we will identify operating cost reductions and improvements that can be made with near term paybacks for the property owner and occupants. Lastly we discuss occupant education and incentives available to help renters become more energy and water efficient. This presentation is an eye-opening discussion that every property owner and manager should hear to save money, improve the comfort of occupants and reduce their impact on the environment.
